Tyeb Mehta , Untitled (Woman on Rickshaw)

The annual South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art auction at Christie’s London is slated for the 25th of May. Most of the works have been sourced from private collections and are to be seen for the first time.

Tyeb Mehta’s (1925-2009) Untitled (Woman on Rickshaw) is leading the sale. Painted in 1994, the artwork features the iconic rickshaw and an abstracted female figure, representing human suffering, indignity, subjugation and struggle for survival.

"The rickshaw is not a simple means of transport but a sign of bondage."– Tyeb Mehta

The London auction will offer a total of 68 works spanning from Bengal School masters Rabindranath and Abanindranath Tagore, to a body of work consisting of 54 individual works designed to be a set of playing cards; where each ‘card’ is by a different artist from the masters to young Indian contemporary artists.

The sale will pay tribute to the Progressive Artists’ Group and their contemporaries, which celebrates 70 years since its foundation on the eve of Indian independence in 1947.

Some of the other stars of the auction are:

Syed Haider Raza , Untitled (Village)

Bhupen Khakhar, Pan Shop No. 1

F.N. Souza, untitled (Lady in Tunic)
