Presented by Gallery Espace, New Delhi & Serendipity Arts Trust, New Delhi

Supported by Theertha Artists’ Collective

This show opened at the IGNCA on the 8th of March.

‘A Tale of Two Cities’ brings together an artist collective comprising Manjunath Kamath, Riyas Komu, Manisha Parekh, Ram Rahman, Paula Sengupta and Chintan Upadhyay from India together with Jagath Weerasinghe, Anoli Perera, Pala Pothupitiya, Bandu Manamperi and Pradeep Chandrasiri from Sri Lanka.

‘A Tale of Two Cities’ is a project that engages this collective in a research based art-making process. It calls on the artists to revisit a city through individual artistic expression born of collaborative seeking and discourse. Varanasi (India) and Anuradhapura (Sri Lanka) form the sites of artistic interpretation and intervention in this cross-cultural artistic exchange.

According to Komu the world today is full of conflicts, there seems to be a lot of political tension between Nations/ States. This project was to him, a way to build relationships and start a dialogue to explore the once shared history between these states.

He explained that he had preconceived ideas about both Varanasi as well as Anuradhapuram. He had to work towards letting go of political and religious ideas that he had been conditioned with before starting on the project. He chose to focus on the contemporary and not the past for his work. Through his work he uses historical memory as a journey towards conceiving non-violent societies.
